Evidence-based

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

The Banyans Medical Centre offers a number of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation suites within our Bowen Hills clinic.

These services are performed by a qualified specialist and are accessible by referral from a mental health care professional.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an evidence-based treatment option for Veterans with depression or PTSD that haven’t responded to conventional therapies.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a non-invasive, evidence-based therapy that is performed within a purpose-built, comfortable clinical room and is overseen by a qualified psychiatrist.

TMS is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia. It does not require anaesthesia, is non-systemic (meaning no medication is introduced into the body), and has minimal side effects, most commonly mild scalp discomfort or headache.

TMS uses a magnetic coil placed gently against the scalp to deliver short magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the brain, most commonly the prefrontal cortex, which plays a key role in mood regulation.

These pulses stimulate nerve cells, regulating brain activity and helping to cultivate new neural pathways. This aims to improve communication between the brain regions involved in mood control.

Patients remain awake and seated during sessions, which usually last about 20–40 minutes.

The sensation is often described as a light, rhythmic tapping on the scalp, like a gentle but firm drumming or buzzing accompanied by the clicks of the machine.

The treatment is not painful, and side effects are considered minimal and usually resolve early in treatment. They include:

  • Mild headaches
  • Scalp sensitivity
  • Fatigue

TMS has been clinically proven to be effective in treating major depressive disorder (MDD), particularly in individuals who have treatment-resistant mental health conditions.

The highest standard of clinical evidence comes from multiple randomised controlled trials (RCTs). These studies have shown significant improvement in depressive symptoms among participants receiving TMS compared to placebo treatments.

Only a mental healthcare professional can assess whether TMS is the right treatment for you. If you would like to learn more about TMS, talk to your GP or your mental healthcare practitioner.
