Skin cancer checks and screening in Bowen Hills
Queensland has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, making regular screening an essential part of routine healthcare. Early detection allows for prompt treatment and better health outcomes.
During a skin check, your GP will assess moles, freckles, and other skin lesions, paying close attention to any spots that are concerning you. Depending on your individual assessment, services available at The Banyans Medical Centre may include:
- Skin cancer checks
- Diagnostic biopsies
- Skin tag removal
- Cyst and lipoma removal
- Skin lesion excisions
- Cryotherapy (freezing treatment)
If a lesion requires further care, your GP will discuss recommended options based on your individual circumstances, including relevant risks and costs, before proceeding.
Who should book a skin check?
You should consider booking an appointment if you notice a new or unusual spot, a sore that does not heal, or a mole or lesion that changes in size, shape, colour or texture.
Know the ABCDE signs of melanoma
When checking your skin, remember the ABCDE guide:
A – Asymmetry: one half of the spot looks different from the other.
B – Border: the edges are irregular, uneven or poorly defined.
C – Colour: the spot contains different colours or uneven colouring.
D – Diameter: the spot is larger than other moles or is increasing in diameter.
E – Evolving: the spot changes in size, shape, colour or other characteristics.
A spot that looks different from your other moles, changes, bleeds, itches or does not heal should be assessed by a doctor.
What to expect at your skin check appointment
Your GP will conduct a thorough visual assessment of your skin using a dermatoscope (a specialised magnifying light instrument). They will check individual spots across your body and examine any specific areas of concern you point out.
If your doctor identifies a suspicious lesion, they will explain the findings clearly and discuss immediate next steps such as scheduling a biopsy, arranging an excision, or monitoring the spot.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I get a skin check?
There is no single skin-check schedule that is suitable for everyone. Your GP can recommend how often you should have your skin examined based on your individual risk factors. People at higher risk of skin cancer may be advised to have clinical skin checks every 6–12 months. Risk factors can include fair skin, many or unusual moles, a personal or family history of melanoma or other skin cancers, reduced immunity, and significant previous sun exposure.
Does Medicare cover a skin check?
The Banyans Medical Centre is a private-billing practice. Medicare rebates may apply to eligible consultations and procedures depending on the services provided, and an out-of-pocket cost may apply. Please check current fees and Medicare rebate information when booking.
What happens if a spot looks suspicious?
Your GP will explain what they have found and recommend the next step. This may include monitoring the area, taking a biopsy, performing an excision, sending tissue for pathology testing or referring you to a healthcare practitioner.
