Referrals

Referrals are required for appointments with all of our medical specialists in order to receive a Medicare rebate. Referrals from other medical specialists are valid for three months, while GP referrals are valid for 12 months. Addiction Sciences Qld patients are advised to ask their GPs for an “indefinite referral” where possible and when treatment is likely to be required for longer than 12 months. For our allied health practitioners, a range of rebates are available for different treatment options when a referral is provided.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?

Our experienced and professional staff will ensure your appointments are as beneficial as possible. To assist you, we have prepared the following checklist for your first appointment.

All patients seeing a medical specialist will require the following:

  • Referral letter from your GP or specialist
  • All x-rays, scans, nerve studies, pathology, and other test results
  • A list of your medications
  • Any questions you may have relating to your condition
  • Your Medicare card and Veterans’ Affairs card (if applicable)
  • Your private health fund details (if applicable)
  • If you are a WorkCover patient, you must bring all contact details for your insurer and your claim number. If you do not have a claim number, you are responsible for paying for the consultation at the time of your appointment.

For patients seeing our Addiction Medicine Specialists regarding opioid dependency, relating to both prescription medications and illicits drugs, you will need to bring:

  • The contact details (name of pharmacy, address, phone, and fax numbers) for a local pharmacy that is prepared to undertake dosing for the Queensland Opioid Treatment Program. This will require you to introduce yourself to the pharmacy prior to your appointment and ensure the pharmacist is happy to provide your dosing service. If you are experiencing difficulties in finding a pharmacy, please contact our Addiction Medicine reception staff who can provide some guidance.
  • A list of your medications
  • Any questions you may have relating to the program and your rehabilitation
  • Your Medicare card
  • Your private health fund details (if applicable)

For patients seeing any of our allied health practitioners, please bring:

  • Your Medicare card
  • Your private health fund details (if applicable)
  • Your referral (if you have one)
  • Your Allied Health Care Plan letter from your GP (if applicable)

Our medical specialists and allied health practitioners charge private fees. Bulk billing is not available.

Our reception staff are able to provide costs for initial and follow up consultations at the time of making your appointment. Medicare rebates are available for most consultations. You can contact our reception staff on 07 3155 3848.

We ask that all consultation fees be paid on the day of your appointment.

Fees can be paid by cash or credit card (excluding American Express and Diners.)

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please do so at least 24 hours ahead of your appointment time. You may incur a cancellation or failure to arrive fee if this does not occur.

There is a long list of patients waiting to see our doctors and allied health practitioners so your cooperation regarding the cancelling or rescheduling of appointments is appreciated.

To cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call our reception staff on 07 3155 3848.

Our medical specialists have their own arrangements regarding repeat prescriptions. Some may require you to see them for a consultation in order to arrange a repeat prescription, while other specialists may charge a small fee to write prescriptions outside of consultations. Please check with your specialist regarding his or her arrangements.

We also encourage patients to check the status of all essential prescriptions before their consultations in order to minimise disruptions caused by last-minute requests for prescriptions when our specialists may not be available.

To make an appointment to see your specialist, please call our reception staff on 07 3155 3848.

Our medical specialists participate in “no gap” arrangements with most private health funds, meaning the health funds are billed directly for any consultations our doctors have with members while they are receiving treatment in hospital.

Our experienced staff can facilitate your admission to hospital, if required. Please ask for assistance regarding this if needed.

Our reception staff can be contacted on 07 3155 3848 or [email protected]
